Mike Durbin rolled 704 for three games, including a 212-207 championship-game win over Nelson Burton Jr., to win the Tucson Open, his second PBA title in three events. Durbin closed the Winter Tour with a victory in the Firestone Tournament of Champions. He was third-seeded going into the Tucson finals and outplayed Mike Aulby, 233-216, and David Ozio, 259-184, to set up the confrontation between the two multi-titled veteran right-handers. Burton, who led the tournament for six consecutive rounds, had a chance to collect the title with a double in the 10th frame. He carried the first strike but left a 10-pin on his dramatic second ball to absorb a five-pin loss. It was the 11th tour crown for Durbin, who brought his championship-round record over a three-and-a-half-year span to 19-2.
