Ed Ressler's second Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) title went into the books as he triumphed over veteran Billy Hardwick, Louisville, Ky., in the finals of the $75,000 Lincoln-Mercury Open. The 20-year-old Ressler, who had won for the first time just one year ago in Winston-Salem, N.C., defeated Hardwick in the title game, 212-181 as Hardwick was on the verge of winning his first PBA title since 1969. Ressler also defeated another veteran, Dave Davis, Atlanta, Ga., in the game preceding the title set-to, 235-201, thwarting Davis in almost the same manner as Hardwick. Davis hasn't been in the PBA's winner's circle since 1970. In the title game, Hardwick got a quick two-pin lead, which just as quickly evaporated when Ressler connected with strikes from the third through the sixth frames, and he coasted in despite a 6-7-10 split in the eighth frame. In addition to the $8,000 first prize, Ressler also won the use of a new Cougar automobile from Lincoln-Mercury for one year.
