Ricky Ward knew he would win again on the PBA Tour, but four years after his first title others may have had their doubts. Ward defeated tournament leader Pete Weber, 240-188, to win the Greater Detroit Open at Tayor Lanes. The win, the second of Ward's career and his first since the 1993 Brunswick Johnny Petraglia Open, was worth $18,000 and qualified Ward for the Showboat "King of the Hill" match at the Wichita Open. "I never thought I wouldn't win again," said Ward. "I've been making two or three shows each year and gaining confidence with each telecast. I've been paying my dues and I got to collect." The ABC-TV telecast started with the Showboat "King of the Hill" match. Reigning "king" Walter Ray Williams Jr. knocked off challenger Tom Baker, who qualified for the match with a win in the Harrisburg Open, 238-150. Williams earned his second $10,000 paycheck and qualified for a chance at $25,000 at the Wichita Open. Ward converted a pair of single-pin spares to open the title match and then rattled off four consecutive strikes. Weber's undoing was the left lane (lane 39). He struck each time on lane 40, but never did strike on lane 39 until his final shot in the 10th frame. Ward finished strong by stringing together four strikes to put the match away.
