Scott Devers earned his fourth PBA title in the $130,000 El Paso Open at Bowl El Paso, 238-185, defeating Joe Salvemini for the $20,000 first prize. Salvemini opened the championship game with four spares, while Devers started with a five-bagger. After back-to-back opens, Salvemini trailed by 70 pins and the eventual outcome was all but finalized mid-game, with Devers coasting into the winner's circle. "The two 7-pin leaves in my first two frames set the tone," Salvemini said, "and when Scott threw five in a row, I knew I'd have to do something, but I couldn't. I knew he was going to be the toughest to face." Devers opened the ABC Sports-televised finals by defeating fellow left-hander Jess Stayrook of San Diego, 236-179. Next up was first-time finalist Billy Hall of Marion, Ohio, who fell, 223-211. In the semifinal game, David Traber of Woodstock, III., making his first championship round appearance, fared no better against Devers' momentum, 226-222.
