Unbeaten in a PBA record 15 consecutive singles matches in championship round competition, Jim Pencak captured his third title of the 1990 Winter Tour in the $150,000 Showboat Atlantic City Open. Fourth-seeded, Pencak, Mayfield Heights, Ohio, defeated leading qualifier Purvis Granger, Columbus, Ohio, 231-215, to capture his fourth PBA title and the $28,000 first prize. Granger opened the championship game with a triple and appeared the one to spell an end to the win streak when Pencak opened in the fourth frame and Granger enjoyed a 21-pin advantage. Pencak then strung a fourbagger, but after Granger struck in his ninth frame, he could have shut out Pencak with a double, but spared. His ball sailed right and never came back and though he spared, it allowed Pencak an opportunity he didn't squander. Pencak then doubled, with his clinching strike first appearing to leave a 7-10 split, but both pins crumbled belatedly to the roar of an appreciative audience. In the first game of the ABC Sports-televised finals, Pencak defeated Hugh Miller, Seattle, 238-209, and then topped Dave Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y., 225-217. In the semifinal, Pencak edged Tony Westlake, Edmond, Okla., 217-206, to set up the battle for the fourth annual Showboat Atlantic City crown.
